DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) combined with aloe vera gel is a popular topical mixture primarily used to soothe joint pain, reduce muscle inflammation, and mitigate skin dryness or irritation. When pure DMSO is applied to the skin, it acts as a highly potent penetration enhancer, meaning it rapidly crosses biological membranes and carries other substances along with it. Aloe vera gel is typically blended with DMSO to dilute its strong concentration, combat skin irritation or burning sensations, and add a hydrating, soothing effect to the application site

Common Ratios and Formulations
Commercial products and home formulations typically rely on specific ratios depending on the user's skin sensitivity and targeted area:
Ratio Blend  Best Used For Notes
70% DMSO / 30% Aloe Joint pain, deep muscle aches, large joints (knees, shoulders). The standard commercial strength. High potency but may cause temporary skin flushing.
50% DMSO / 50% Aloe Sensitive skin, initial testing, or application to softer tissue areas. Highly recommended for first-time users to evaluate skin tolerance.

Documented Risks and Side Effects

  • The "DMSO Odor": Within minutes of applying it to your skin, you will likely notice a strong garlic or oyster-like taste in your mouth and an identical smell on your breath. This is completely normal; it is caused by the body metabolising DMSO into dimethyl sulfide, which is then exhaled through the lungs.
  • Local Irritation: Expect mild skin redness, itching, warmth, or a stinging sensation that lasts for 10–30 minutes post-application.
  • Contraindications: Do not use DMSO if you are pregnant, nursing, or suffering from severe liver or kidney disease.
