Niacinamide powder is a 100% pure, concentrated form of Vitamin B3 used as a customisable skincare "booster" to improve skin texture and tone. Unlike pre-mixed serums, it allows you to control the concentration and maintain maximum potency by mixing fresh doses right before application.

Benefits for Skin

The powder form offers the same core benefits as niacinamide serums but in a more direct and versatile application:

  • Oil and Pore Control: It regulates sebum (oil) production, which helps minimise the appearance of enlarged pores and reduces the likelihood of clogs.
  • Brightening: It inhibits melanin transfer, effectively fading dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and post-acne marks for a more even complexion.
  • Barrier Support: It stimulates the production of ceramides and lipids, strengthening the skin's natural moisture barrier against environmental stressors.
  • Anti-Ageing: By supporting collagen production, it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving skin elasticity.

Usage and Mixing Guidelines

Because it is a 100% pure active, the powder must be handled carefully to avoid irritation.

  • Base Requirements: Only mix with water-based products, such as hydrating serums (e.g., Hyaluronic Acid), moisturisers, or facial mists. It will not dissolve in oil-based products.
  • Dosage: Most brands, such as The Ordinary 100% Niacinamide Powder, recommend using only a quarter scoop (using the provided spoon) mixed with about 4 drops of serum or a pea-sized amount of moisturiser.
  • Application: Dissolve the powder completely in the palm of your hand before applying the resulting mixture to a cleansed face and neck.
  • Avoid Higher Concentrations: Using more than the recommended amount will not yield better results and can lead to a grainy texture or a white residue upon drying.

Important Precautions

  • Conflict with Acids: Do not mix niacinamide powder with Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)AHAs (e.g., Glycolic or Lactic acid), or BHAs (Salicylic acid). Combining them can cause pH imbalances and severe skin flushing or irritation.
  • Safe pH Range: The final mixture should maintain a pH between 5.0 and 7.0. If the pH drops too low, niacinamide can convert into nicotinic acid, which causes skin redness.
  • Sunscreen Rule: Never mix niacinamide powder—or any active—directly into your sunscreen, as this can compromise its protective efficacy.
  • Patch Testing: Always perform a patch test before full application, as high concentrations of niacinamide can cause tingling, burning, or redness in some users.
